So long as you have lungs, a spine and curiosity to try, youāre the perfect student. š Itās called a yoga ālessonā for a reason. Youāre here to learn about yoga, yourself, and your potential, no matter what level or experience you have.
WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?
āItās not about how you look; itās about how you feelā in class. Ideally, it is recommended you wear light, comfortable and loosely fitted leggings/pants/soft shorts, or gym wear. It is best to avoid heavy or bulky track pants and t-shirts/tops that will distract your focus or safety on the mat.
WHAT SHOULD I BRING?
Bring your own yoga mat and water bottle. You are more than welcome to bring your own towel or block if you like, however it is not necessary. There is a kitchen where you can top up your water bottle. There are toilet facilities and change rooms as well. Some students take advantage of the location and like to go for a swim after class in Ramsgate Beachš so feel free to bring your swimmers!
WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM A STOIC YOGA CLASS?
- Beginning: Classes begin with a theme/philosophical quote which is weaved throughout the lesson as a guide for some new thought or idea for students to consider and contemplate.
- Breathing is the key. Expect to breathe, breathe, breathe like never before. In STOIC YOGA classes, the ābreath is the music, and the body does the danceā. Breath always initiates movements and guides the whole practice. Consider it an opportunity to learn to breathe consciously so the positive effects last beyond your time on the mat. Various breathing techniques will also be explored, depending on the class.
- Warming up and prepping the body and mind always precedes the general flow and core structure of class which can include various standing, seated, kneeling, twisting, lateral, inverted, reclining, supine and prone postures and sun salutation variations.
- Expect either a slower or stronger flowing sequences, repetition and holds. It all depends on the student needs on any given day.
- Customisation, adaptation, modifications of postures are offered throughout the flow of the class which is influenced by the attending student mix and their needs. Hence why classes can comprise of mixed levels. It is your practice so your needs will determine how soft or strong you will flow or hold postures. This is how you develop a connection with your body by learning from the information/wisdom it gives you.
- Ending: Lessons culminate to a resting savasana and brief meditation, ending the lesson in a way that allows the experience, effects, and benefits of your practice to be felt and received fully so you carry the positive feeling off your mat and into your daily life.
WHAT DO YOU EXPECT FROM STUDENTS BEFORE/DURING CLASS?
- Time: Please do arrive at least 5 minutes prior to your lesson starting so class can start promptly with respect to everyone ready to start at same time.
- Safety in the form self-care/self-responsibility is paramount. Students are encouraged to inform teacher of any old or new conditions/injuries that may affect the student on the day of their class. We feel different from day to day so if its something of concern, students are expected to practice safely and within their limits ensuring they listen to and are guided by the wisdom of their bodies.
- Respect for themselves and others facilitates the current supportive community feel, connection and sense of belonging that has beautifully evolved since stoic yoga started at the surf club. It truly belongs to the community and is made up of like-minded people. On many occasions, donāt be surprised that if time permits, you may end up going for coffee and chit chat with the teacher and other students after class šof course itās not obligatory, but its nice to see when it does organically flow on to a social level afterward, especially given the beautiful location with beach views and vibes.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD I PRACTICE?
While attending regular weekly classes is ideal, it all depends on your time and lifestyle constraints. Even if you attended only 1 class a week, itās to your benefit to employ the breathing techniques you learn in class daily or even 5-10 minutes of daily stretches with combined breathing has so many benefits to sustain you between class attendance times.
