What is Stoic Yoga?
Stoic Yoga is a breath centred vinyasa flow practice, elegantly blending the principles of viniyoga together with stoic philosophy.
This unique approach is student centric and classes are adapted to the continually changing needs of each individual – designed to achieve maximum therapeutic effect and value.
Inviting transformation through the intelligent and systematic application, as well as exploration of various yoga tools, Stoic Yoga includes breathwork, postures and meditation– which enhances the continuous link of breath, body and mind.
Classes are accessible, inclusive and practical, as they follow the four principles of viniyoga: repetition and stay, function over form, breath and adaptation, along with the art and science of appropriate and intelligent sequencing.
Students are also guided by the four stoic philosophy principles: wisdom, courage, justice, and temperance. (Stoicism)*
All levels and experience are welcome, as each individual is encouraged to work at their own level and pace – depending on how they feel on the day. This creates a safe, nurturing and practical way of gaining the most out of each lesson.
With regular practice, students cultivate a clearer and calmer mind, deeper and fuller breathing, all whilst building strength, stability and flexibility. This results in the ultimate goal of yoga – which is a harmonious mind, body and breath realisation.
“We never step in the same river twice, for it’s not the same river and we are not the same person”.
Heraclitus – Greek Philosopher
‘Like everything, yoga must be presented intelligently. It should be spoken of carefully and offered with due regard for the aspirations, needs and cultural background of the individual. This must be achieved in stages. The appropriate application of yoga – involving physical exercises, deep breathing relaxation, meditation, lifestyle, food, studies and so forth – is, for me, what is represented by the word viniyoga.’
TKV Desikachar – son of Tirumalai Krishnamacharya
